BEST WISHES OF INDIAN SYSTEM OF NEW YEAR : VIKRAM SAMVAT 2083

BEST WISHES OF INDIAN (HINDU) SYSTEM OF NEW YEAR : VIKRAM SAMVAT 2083

Dear Readers,

Our India is an interesting Nation, our unity in Diversity. It is very interesting to know about our Traditions and Culture. This is an Occasion for me to explain you about this piece of our traditions and culture, an important day in our Indian (Hindu) System of New Year, that is being celebrated today.

Today is the Pratipada (First Day) of Shukla Pakshya of the Indian Month of "Chaitra", that comes 15days after the "Phalguna Purnima" or "Dola Purnima"( the full moon day of the Indian month of "Phalguana"). As per English Calendar, today is March 19, 2026 all of you know. Today is also the 1st Day of Vikram Samvat 2083 which has been designated generally as Hindu New Year.
Best wishes on Hindu New Year day today.
I will explain you what is Vikram Samvat here below after a little while. However, before that, let me also explain you how important is today in our Unity in Diversity as per National Traditions and Culture when I said we are a Nation of Unity in Diversity. Today is being Celebrated in Maharashtra as "Gudi Pudwa" New Year as Hindu New Year, a Big Festival in the state of Maharashtra; today is also being celebrated as "Ugadi" in the States of Andhra Pradhesh, Telengana and Karnataka the same as a New Year as a Hindu New Year. The Sindhis (the Residents of "Sindh" Region) celebrate today as "Cheti Chand" as a New Year, as Hindu System New Year. Today is a Public Holiday in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana and Karnataka. Of course we have some regional variation in New Year also localized, like in Gujarat the Gujaratis Celebrate the New Year, the First Day of the Shukla Pakhya of the Indian Month of Kartik that is the first day after Diwali Festival, in Odisha the "Bishub Shankranti" (Pana Shankranti) Day that comes in the month of "Baisakh" is celebrated as New Year, in West Bengal the "Pahila Baishakh" (first day of the month of Baishakh) is celebrated as New Year. These are all Hindu System of Celebrating New Year from ancient times. If you examine and go through you will find such examples in other states and regions of India, very interesting as a Nation, Unity in Diversity. I have given the examples that are not exhaustive, I am sure you will get many more examples.

However as I said above, today, the 1st Day of Vikram Samvat (Vikram Year) 2083 is generally designated as Hindu New Year. Let me also explain what is Vikram Samvat (Vkram Year). The Vikram Year System also followed in Indian Subcontinent (India and Nepal) as the Hindu Year system or Hindu Calendar System. The "King Vikramaditya" of India who as per History Records existed in the BCE Era in India and considered as a Popular and Famous Ruler of that era, started the Vikram Samvat (Vikram Year) system named after him. The Vikram Samvat's First day was considered as the 1st Day of Sukla Pakshya (the Pratipada Day) of the Indian Month of "Chaitra" in the year 57 BCE. As all know the AD System of year counting as per English Calendar System started from the Birth of "Jesus Christ ". So, the year of Birth of "Jesus Christ" has been considered as year 0001 AD as per English calender system and it goes on after that year after year added to it, and we are in the year 2026 AD now. The 1st January of AD System of English Calendar is considered as the New Year as per English Calendar that is known. The Era before AD System of year counting as per English Calendar is called as BCE Era. Thus Vikaram Samvat in India which is considered as the Indian Hindu System of Year counting started 56-57 years before the AD System of English Calendar Year counting, on 57 BCE or generally considered as 57years before the AD System year counting that started with the Birth of Jesus Christ. Therefore, if you add 57 to the AD Year of English Calendar, as example if you add 57 to the present English Calendar year 2026, you get Vikram Samvat as 2083. Accordingly today, the "Pratipada Day" ( first day ) of Shukla Pakshya of the Month of "Chaitra" as per Indian Month naming system, that comes 15days after the "Phalgun Purnima Day" (full moon day of the Indian month of Phalguna" is counted as 1st Day of Vikram Samvat 2083  ( which is March 19, 2026 as per English Calendar System) which has been generally designated as Hindu New Year.
As I said, there are different regional variations in India as normally different states celebrating New Year as per their local traditions and cultural diversity in that area, those are existing and accepted locally in that area, without any issues, that is our Unity in Diversity in India.

Thanks a lot to all of you for kindly understanding my writing about this piece of our Indian Traditions and Culture that has been existing from ancient times. We are certainly proud of our Traditions and Culture in India and our Unity in Diversity in India as a Nation.
