A SECTION OF PRESS AND PUBLIC MEDIA PITTING EVERY DECISION DONE ELSEWHERE IN THE WORLD AS IF AGAINST INDIA TO DISPLAY A DISTORTED PICTURE: MAY NOT BE THE REALITY
Dear Readers,
Let me say with reasonable certainty and authenticity that what we all see A SECTION OF PRESS AND PUBLIC MEDIA PITTING EVERY DECISION DONE ELSEWHERE IN THE WORLD AS IF AGAINST INDIA TO DISPLAY A DISTORTED PICTURE: MAY NOT BE THE REALITY.
I am referring to the decision taken at USA just a day back imposing 100% Tariffs on Branded and Patented Pharmaceuticals (Drugs) import to USA.
This decision will hardly affect the Indian Pharmaceutical Exports to USA. From India we export about USD 11 Billion worth of Pharmaceuticals per year that is about 37% of the total USD 30 Billion worth of Pharmaceuticals Exports India does per year world wide, and it is largely Generic Drugs exported to USA, hardly any Branded and Patented Pharmaceuticals being exported. India will not be affected by this decision.
Let me explain you all who may not understand the difference between Generic Drugs and Branded and/or Patented Drugs (Pharmaceuticals) in very simple language which everyone will easily understand:
1. Paracetamol ...........Is a Generic Drug. It is a Technical Product or Active Ingredient that acts as a medication when consumed for any ailment symptom. It is a Generic Pharmaceutical when exported to USA it will not have the New 100% Tariff on Branded and Patented Pharmaceuticals announced by USA Applicable to it.
2. Crocin 500 mg or Dolo 625 mg ....are Formulated and Branded Products of Paracetamol for Example commonly known in India. If the manufacturers of Crocin 500 mg or Dolo 625 mg do exports of these Branded Products to USA it will attract the New 100% Tariff Applicable to Branded and Patented Pharmaceuticals. However, India hardly exports such Branded Products to USA.
3. Patented (and Branded) Pharmaceutical Product .....Cefiderocol (Fetroja): As example, it is both a Branded and Patented Product, a newer cephalosporin antibiotic that received FDA approval in 2019 for complicated urinary tract infections and hospital-acquired pneumonia. It is a product Patented by the Japanese Pharma Manufacturer "SHIONOGI" who has branded it as "Fetroja". When this product is exported to USA it will attract the New 100% Tariff. India hardly exports Patented and Branded Products to USA.
4. Off-Patent (Patent Expired) and Bio-Similar Generic Product ...... Example Azithromycin . Originally some years back it is Pfizer, the MNC Pharma Manufacturer, had Patented Azithromycin with the Brand Name "Zithromax" and its Patent has expired. Therefore, when Azithromycin is Exported from India to USA it is an Off-Patent Generic Product and it will not attract the New 100% tariff announced a day back. India Exports lot of Off Patent (Patent Expired) Generic Products to USA also.
Bio Similars are products that are similar in Chemical Structure to the Original Generic Product, however not exactly the Original Generic Product. India Exports a lot of Bio Similars as Generic Drugs to USA and it will not attract the New 100% Tariff announced a day back.
With much reasonable exposure and experience of mine to the Domestic and International Pharma Industry, I am explaining you the above with certain and definite level of authenticity.
India is a Large Pharmaceuticals Manufacturer of the World with a very large Domestic Pharma Market and with USD 30 Billion Exports of Pharma Products per year now Globally that has to be recognized without dispute.
I am giving below the link of a News Article of Public Domain, that is released by none other than Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India ( A Govt of India Promoted Export Promotion Council) that will make you clear on this subject, how the New 100% Tariff on Branded and Patented Pharmaceuticals announced by USA a day back will Not Affect India.
Why Is Indian Pharma Sector Largely Spared From Trump's 100% Tariff Announcement? EXPLAINED
In reality and also it looks like that a section of motivated press and public media are taking undue advantage in pitting every decision being taken elsewhere as if taken against India to display a may-be non-existent rift or to create a non-existent rift with our partner Large Nations, which all of you should be careful not to take it and imbibe in that way.
I thought this situation should be well explained for National Benefit and in the National Interest of India.
