WHY AN "EDUCATION ABROAD" HAS BEEN BECOMING A "CRAZE" IN INDIA AND BEING FELT AS IF A "SHATTERED DREAM" WHEN THE FOREIGN LANDS HAVE THEIR OWN NATIONAL REGULATORY ISSUES IN PLAY: THOUGHTS FOR INDIAN SOCIETY

Dear Readers,

All of us in India, as Students, Parents (even some may be Grand Parents), Family Members, Faculty in some Educational institutions in India, Administrators or Executives in Organizations and if not anything else as Citizens of India, have sufficient ground and cause to think and apply our judicious mind as to; "Why an "Education Abroad" has been becoming a "Craze" in India and being felt as if a "Shattered Dream" when the Foreign Lands have their own national regulatory issues in play".

It is understood, during the British Rule of 300 years in our past of India, at that time, while our Old and Strong Education Back Bone that we were having in India since Ancient Times, got literally destroyed, there were not enough education facilities built in India by the then Ruling Britishers as they wanted to keep the Indians enslaved at that time without opening too much eyes of Indians with better and higher education. At that time, those who could afford or manage to grab it, were going to England for Education/Higher Education and after that, coming back to India to fetch a Better life and Better Job or Position in the Society as England Educated persons.

After Independence in 1947, expanding, improving and upgrading the education system in India has been in continuous thrust and very focused, as it was felt in India in the Post Independence era that by giving better education to the Indian Population as a whole, eliminating illiteracy, what India had missed during the 300 years of British Rule in the past, will help for the large Nation of India Progress and match shoulders with others in the world. Since 1947 independence; education facilities have been built continuously and continuously for last 78years in India to expand it to the level today, that we are nothing less than in width and size to any other nation of the world. In India, right now, in my opinion and concrete observation over a very long time, other than only one field, that is Post Graduate Medical Education, we are not lacking in any thing, any education you want it is there in India and Enough of it and also Qualitatively comparable to the World. We have a huge population exceeding 140 Crores (1400 millions) now and given that consideration and comparing to that requirement for health for such a huge population, we have comparatively very few number of seats in India to pursue Post Graduate Medical Education, it can not be said to be enough, it can not be disputed.

It is always and everywhere, say it in USA, UK or anywhere in the World, all Educational Institutions and Facilities may not be the same in Standard, Quality and Coverage, as the Five Fingers in our own hand are not same, the most common example given anywhere. Same situation exists in India, we have Education Facilities that are Excellent and High Class now, that can equip anyone with education nothing less than the Best of the World and we have others who are of Common Standard that is workable and quite efficient also and it has proved efficient over time, and in fact, that common standard is running the Nation most efficiently now, and that common standard has made our Nation as the fastest growing economy in the world today, and we are the 4th Largest Economy in the World today.

The Question by which I have been concerned in my mind and I am writing this note for all of you my Readers, as to why an "Education Abroad" has become such a Craze in the Indian Families and their Children today? Why if some Nation like USA (only to draw as an example and for the example purpose only in the present times) in recent times intends to put their National Regulatory Control Mechanism for their National Purpose and Reasons in the Educational Area, is so much frustrating to Parents and Children in India as if their dreams for such an education abroad getting shattered. It is their National Requirement and Reasons we can do nothing in that and we can't say anything in that as it is their purview and jurisdiction to regulate their education environment as they would like to be befitting to their Nation, they are entitled to ensure whatever they feel good for their Nation, fair enough, we have no choice other than to accept it in all fairness. I have heard from some parents and children from India, in recent times that they feel let down in their mind that they wanted to pursue such an education abroad and they are in severe doubt and feel frustrated by that.... absolutely not required, there is no need to harbour such frustration ... anybody either the Parents or Children who have asked me I have told them that. I think this kind of regulatory issues for bettering the environments around the nations of the world is going to come more and more in the future days to come.

When we have everything in our Nation in India and nothing less than that exists anywhere in the World, why should we be crazy to have an education abroad, and then harbour frustration in our minds, when there are some National regulatory issues come on the way in the Foreign Countries, that is the bye-product of the National Priorities of those Nations which we can not help in India in any way, it is just not under our purview in India to be clear.

I will not leave this note half-baked for all of you. Let me deal with the Question why an "Education Abroad" is becoming a Craze in India in contemporary times, to the extent I can manage to deal within this note:

1.    There is a superficial and unfounded feeling created in India and is being created that the Foreign Educated Individuals are some Superior Breed of Persons than the India-Educated Persons within our Country. This is absolutely wrong to create such a feeling in Indian Society. All of us and all in India should make effort to throw such an undue, unfair, superficial and unfounded feeling from Indian Society.
I will give you an example with my first hand experience, some years back, in fact some long years back, I had approached an IIM (it will not be fair to name) seeking to know if I can teach there as a faculty. I do have a Ph.D. and I was fully eligible to do that, however, my only draw back was that I am having a Ph.D. from an Indian University in spite of the fact that my educational back ground is excellent and some of the Best Faculty of a Prestigious IIM helped and guided me to secure and get the Ph.D. awarded. I was told in plain language and in very simple way that there they preferred normally American Ph.D. (unwritten norm followed there then at that time, as I said some years back and some long years back; when I had tried to approach and discuss with them). It was a reality, I took it bowing to their unwritten rule without choice at that time, it was their prerogative then, I am not inclined to discuss that further here as I said and described here for example for purpose only.

2.     Some families have better access to resources and wealth in India, they try to send their Children Abroad to get educated in a Foreign Educational Institution to create feeling of Superiority and Ego, within their Corporate Entity (Company) if they Own or Manage One in India, where their children can just come back from the Foreign University and join their Boards as Directors, surpassing all Qualified, Highly Educated and Experienced persons who may be slugging for decades in their Owned/Managed Companies. Others who may be Professionals earning in Good amounts also send their Children Abroad for Education; as when they come back, they will be rated as Superior to their contemporaries and classmates in India.

3.     Some families of India try to have Education Abroad for their children as they would like their Children to Work Abroad and Settle Abroad and earn more money and have perceived better quality of life ( even if they may be treated there as 2nd or 3rd Class Citizens in those countries).

4.     In Government Sectors and Political Fields of Engagement, still there is some feeling in vogue and unwritten assumptions in operation, that those who are educated abroad from a foreign university, they are a preferred lot to occupy some positions of better power and leverage among others in India in those sectors and fields.

5.     The Public Media in India has lot of contribution to the Superficial and Unfounded feeling of Superiority created for the Foreign Education. You will invariably see, in case of any High Profile Appointment anywhere, while they will publish some profile of the person in Media in public domain, they will highlight greatly how that Person is educated from a Foreign Educational Institution and as if that is a Great Tool for the Claim of that Person for that Position and if he/she would not have been in that position with that Foreign Education, as if heaven would have fallen in India. Thus Public Media also has created immensely this False Ego and Craze about Education Abroad, that has been the British Era legacy still wrongly propagated in Indian Society which does not deserve to exist in Indian Society any more, should be thrown out by all of us and everyone in Indian Society for Good.

6.     All of you yourselves can find other reasons as you would find out, and add to the above list I have made, however, I am sure all of you will find what I have listed above are by-far true, as I have observed it very keenly over a long period of time. While I myself have become a Senior Citizen in India by age becoming more than 60 years (by age criterion) and more than 40years experience in Indian Environment after my Technical Graduation Degree, I am sure my observation is over a very long period of time of at least for last 40years.

In India, from ancient times, while education was taking place in popular "Gurukul" below the Trees, in the "Ashrams" of Saints ( Munis and Rishis ) we were one of the Best in the World for our Education in India. In the Past further, we had "Nalanda" and "Takshashila" Universities that attracted all Others from the World to India to study there. As I said the 300-years of British Rule had pulled us down, however post Independence in 1947, we have pulled up ourselves very extensively, widely, Qualitatively and Excellently (after the Independence) to Upgrade and Improve our Education in India to be Comparable and to brush shoulders with the Best of the World.

Even two of my children both of whom are MBBS Doctors educated in India and are placed in two large and very reputed Hospitals at Mumbai, they work with all Big India Educated and Reputed Doctors as their Seniors; I hear from time to time that lot of people from Abroad and VIPs from Abroad (from Foreign Countries) visit the Large and Reputed Hospitals in Mumbai ( or so to say in India) to get treated for their health in India (for them cost factor in India is less, but they also feel the Quality and Efficiency of Treatment in India is nothing less than the World elsewhere).

Let us all of us consider in India that; our Education in India is very Wide and Extensive now, Qualitatively Comparable to the World's Best and we are nothing less than anyone. As I said above, our Common Education Standard and Commoners from our Education System in India Mostly and Largely are Running the Country in fact, for which we are the Fastest Growing Economy and 4th Largest Economy in the World Today.

The "Education Abroad' should not be made such a "Craze" as is being made out today in India in the contemporary times, we do have a very robust Education System and Extensive Educating Capability in India, no need to break head and create frustrations if any one and anywhere (even if might have dreamt of it ) can not go for an "Education Abroad".

If we love our Home Land (Motherland) India, we tend to love our Education in India much more than anywhere in the World. Let me also declare vehemently that, it does not mean I myself or my children did not have opportunity to go for the "Education Abroad" for crucial educations, however I myself in principle; I loved the Education in India where ever we could afford and got it by my merits and the merits of my children within India, in our Nation, and we remain very satisfied and proud of it having in India in our Motherland.
