WHETHER IT IS THE SON OR DAUGHTER PERFORMING THE LAST RITES OF A PARENT: IS NO MORE AN ISSUE PRESENTLY IN INDIAN SOCIETY

Dear Readers,

It is no more an issue in Indian Society in the Contemporary times, whether a Son or Daughter performs the Last Rites by Lighting the Funeral Pyre of a Parent, it is being made acceptable, as is known.

Normally the Eldest Child performs the last rites, in case the eldest child can not do it due to any justified reason, any child lights the Funeral Pyre of the Parent, where the mortal remains are cremated by consigning into flames. In Hindu Society also in the contemporary times, the tradition is getting liberalized and being acceptable, if a Son is available to light the funeral pyre he does it, if not available; a daughter is being allowed to do that in the contemporary times; it is getting widely accepted now a days, without distinction or demarcation among the both and without barriers. Even a Son-in-law or a Daughter-in-law can perform the same act in case of special circumstances, it is just in the availability context, even not necessarily only the biological children, the adopted children are also allowed and being allowed under relevant circumstances to perform the act, to be clear about it.

I read the following news report published by The Times of India, regarding Ms. Upinder Singh, the Eldest Daughter of Hon'ble Dr. Manmohan Singh performing the last rites by first lighting the funeral pyre of her father yesterday, it is perfectly right and acceptable most honourably; here is the news report link:

The Educated Mass of people must reconcile to the facts and realities, and should not succumb to unnecessary controversies, it is just a matter of reforming the society, the Society is getting reformed with time, and adapting the traditions and cultural norms to the contemporary times with liberalized ethos to make it acceptable to the society without creating barriers.
