BEST WISHES ON "SABITRI AMAVASYA" : ONE OF THE BEST TRADITIONS OF INDIAN CULTURE -- THE LESS PUBLICIZED BUT IMPORTANT INDIAN FESTIVAL.

Dear Readers,

Today is "Sabitri Amavasya" ( the 15th day, the Krushna Pakshya of Indian Calender Month of "Jyesta" ).

Many times and invariably, I write on Indian Festivals to Remember and Rejuvenate the Best Traditions of Indian Culture and our Cultural Heritage.

"Sabitri Amavashya" is one of the Important Festivals, but less publicised with fan fare like other festivals of India,  also celebrated in India, quite across the India in two forms"
1.   In Odisha and its neighbouring States as " Sabitri Brata"
2.   In Other Parts of India, in some Northern Indian States and Other Areas of India as "Vat Sabitri"
Both the above forms of Celebration of the Festival more or less have the same theme. ... The Indian Wives ( Female Spouses ) praying and worshiping for the Long Life of their Husbands ( their Male Spouses ). This is the primary theme and purpose of this Festival.

The "Sabitri Amavashya" festival is otherwise Equivalent of another Festival named as "Karuwa Chauth" celebrated in India which is more publicised and celebrated with fan fare across the country - the theme  being the same where the Indian Wives Pray and Worship for the Long Life and Well Being of their Husbands. Normally where the "Karuwa Chauth" is celebrated there the people do not celebrate "Sabitri Amavashya" while the purpose and theme of the festival is same, but both are celebrated at Different Times of the year, that is all.

The Sabitri Amavasya Celebrated as "Sabitri Brata" and "Vat Sabitri": The legendary story behind it:
The roots of this festival link to a legendary story in Indian Mythology called as "Sabitri-Satyaban Story".
Sabitri is a princess who marries an exiled prince named Satyaban, who is prophesied to die early. One day when Satyaban goes to the Jungle to cut and get some fire wood for the household, he gets bitten by a poisonous snake there and dies. That Sabitri came to know and she went to the Jungle and kept sitting and guarding her husband's dead body.  In Indian Mythology it is believed that, when a person dies, "Lord Yama" the Lord of Death, comes with His Assistants and Accessories to take the Soul of the Person out of the body in this World,
When Satyaban was bitten by the Poisonous Snake in the Jungle and Lord Yama came take away the Soul of Satyaban from his Body, Sabitri fought with Lord Yama by all ways putting her "Purity of Commitment" towards her husband at stake in all possible ways, that is a long story. She ultimately was able to win over Lord Yama by the Power of her Purity of Commitment towards her husband ( Patibrata ) and Satyaban came back to life again. Thus Sati-Sabitri ( Sabitri as Symbol of Purity and Patibrata ) as she is worshiped today, she saves her husband from the god of death, Yama, persuading the deity to restore his life. Satyaban comes back alive and both Sabitri and Satyaban live happily again as Spouses ( Husband and Wife )
I wrote the story in short, in case some of you may not know about it.

During this Festival ... the Married Ladies ( Wives ) keep fast and do worshiping (puja) the Gods and Goddess-Sabitri praying for the Long Life and Well Being of their Husbands, the "Husbands are also Prayed" by the Wives during this Festival is a prime customary activity of the Festival. Since this Festival is primarily a kind of private function and celebration between the Wife and Husband, a family affair so to say, it has not been so much publicized in media like other festivals. But no doubt, it is an important tradition and festival celebrated with utmost respect and perseverance, in the areas it is celebrated, it goes without saying.

The Faith and Belief pursued makes the life a lot easier and happier and these kind of Festivals in our Indian Culture and Cultural Heritage make life a bit easier and happier with mental happiness, not exactly to be related to material world. The Material and Mental Happiness ... both are important for happier life.

BEST WISHES ON "SABITRI AMAVASYA" FOR ALL AND EVERYONE.
