Today ( 19-Sept-2023 ) is "Ganesh Chaturthi" celebrated as the Birth Day of Lord Ganesh, almost universally across the globe, where Indians are there and also in many places where Indiana are not.

Lord Ganesh has been almost accepted universally across religious boundaries.

Lord Ganesh, as per legendary and mythological beliefs, is believed to be the Destroyer of all Perils. He had demonstrated the Greatest Commitment to a cause he could, to preserve the Dignity of his mother, for which he was assigned to guard, while her mother "Goddess Parvati" went to take bath assigning him to guard at the entrance and not allow anybody to enter; he did not even allow his Father Lord Shiva who arrived there after, to enter the place.


However, while Lord Ganesh was beheaded by Lord Shiva, and at the insistence of Goddess Parvati to revive her son Ganesh otherwise she would take her life, Lord Shiva was compelled to revive Lord Ganesh, though with an Elephant kid's head. However as a reward, Lord Shiva had to also commit, that "Lord Ganesh" will get first preference over any other God, he should be Called In and Worshipped first before any other God in a Ritual where a number of Gods are Called in and worshiped at the same time. 

That is why the Sanskrit Shloka which is used to be prayed almost in every occasion of a Ritual is like this: 

"Gane, Narayane, Rudre, Ambike, Bhaskare Tathah ... Bhinna Bhinna na-kartbaym, Pancha Deva Namastute".

Lord Ganesh ( in the name of Lord Siddhi Vinayak ) is the Presiding Deity of the City of Bombay(Mumbai), Every place by legendary beliefs and historically has a "Presiding Deity" if you apply mind, you will find one of them, at each place. Like Varanasi ... Baba Bishwanth.  Like Bhubaneswar... Lord Lingaraj, Like Puri .... Lord Jagannath. Like Gauhati ... Devi Kamakshya, Like Madurai  .... Devi Meenakshi,   Vijaywawda ---- Devi Kanak Durga , Dwarka.... Lord Krishna , Kolkata ...... Devi Kali Mata   ..... are all presiding Deities of these locations. You will find such instances in most of the or all locations, you try and apply mind you will get it.


About the Author : Dr. Nimain Charan Biswal is a B.Sc.(Agri. Science and Technology), M.B.A. and Ph.D.(Management Area ) by qualifications; and he has 37 years of work experience in both industrial and development sectors in diversified fields of social importance. He has been educated at Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT)-Bhubaneswar, Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) and Gujarat University (with Resource Support of IIM-Ahmedabad).
