THE VAUE OF "YOGA" : TO A LADY COMMONER OF 75YEARS-AN EXPERIENCE : REMEMBERING ON INTERNATIONAL "YOGA" DAY
Today, 21st June is being celebrated as International Yoga Day.
It was approved as International Yoga Day by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2014 and is being formally celebrated as the International Yoga Day from 21-June-2015.
The Government of India was instrumental in getting it approved by the UNGA in 2014, it is not denied and due credit goes to it, that is also not denied.
"Yoga" has been a practice, a way of life, for those who can practice and adopt it, for the fitness of body and mind both, ensuring holistic health and fitness, has been an ancient Wisdom of India. Yoga itself and its practice is primarily Non-Religious in nature, however, as its origins are linked to ancient Yogic Practices inherent to Saints of Hindu Faith and Cultural Heritage, a religious tone is attached to it many times, however over time, world wide it is being seen beyond the religious tones now, as the purpose is human health and wellbeing.
It is also true, the Ancient Saint "Patanjali" had for the first time documented "Yoga Practices and Principles" and had brought it into record as " Patanjali Yoga Sutras " that has remained as the guidelines and principles of yogic practices at its roots from ancient times, based on that there have been volumes and tonnes written over the history in various forms of literature on Yoga.
Until 1998 I did not know what "Yoga" was all about, and it goes back to 25years back, when I was introduced to "Yoga" by a friend and classmate of mine who was living then at Delhi and was working as Dy.Secretary in the Finance Department of Government of India. Being a close friend, I was staying at his home for a day, and in the morning he and his wife both, took me along to a Public Park in Saket area of Delhi to see and join the morning Yoga programme being done there daily by an unit of "Bharatiya Yoga Sansthan" free for all. I did "Yoga" for the first time that day in 1998 there and was very impressed with it.
I came back to Ahmedabad the next day and started to join a similar unit of "Bharatiya Yoga Sansthan" in Ahmedabad doing Yoga Programme daily from 6AM to 7AM in a Public Park very near to my home, while I was living then at Ahmedabad. After that no looking back. I purchased some books on Yoga and accessories to do Yoga from them at very nominal cost, the Yoga Programme as free for all in that Park. I learned there very sincerely, my wife also joined there after some time. As we practiced regularly and attended there regularly, seeing us very promising Yoga Practitioners and having learnt it fast and very well with good skills and experience, the volunteers of "Bharatiya Yoga Sansthan" there in about 3-months time, selected us to also work as Voluntary Yoga Teachers to teach "Yoga" to others there in the Free for All Programmes and we accepted to roles as a service to the public. So there, myself and my wife had committed us as Voluntary Yoga Teachers to teach "Yoga" to others who attended at that Public Park of Ahmedabad organized by "Bharatiya Yoga Sansthan" daily from 6AM to 7AM for about 5-years as we could afford in our situation then for this voluntary service to public, and also as after that, we shifted our residence to Mumbai, it was not possible to continue the same.
In the Process I read a lot on Yoga and also learnt a lot about it. I have also learnt "Yoga" a lot from its Scientific Basis and Back Ground and Linkages. Yoga indeed has a lot of linkages to Biology and Health Sciences that I have realized over the years, which is more than 25years now. I do not claim like or to be any of those Branded Yoga Guru Baba(s), however I have learnt it quite well and quite extensively.
Sharing the Experience with a Commoner Lady of 75 years who was trying for doing Yoga while I was teaching Yoga there and what she had said its value to her then........
While I was teaching Yoga at Ahmedabad as a free and voluntary service, in a public park in the auspices of "Bharatiya Yoga Sansthan" say from 1998 to 2003, I could see lot of older people and senior citizens ( more than 60years by age ) used to come in the morning to learn and practice "Yoga" daily. I could mark a Commoner Gujarati Lady of about 75years of Age coming daily to learn and practice Yoga there, I had to teach her Yoga in that public park. I could see she was struggling a lot to do different postures of Yoga but she was doing it quite determined manner. One day being curious I tried to meet her personally in that park alone and tried to find out why she was doing Yoga in such determined manner at such age of 75.
What the Respectable; Gujarati Lady explained to me and said to me is like this .....
"My husband is very sick. He is under Oxygen 24-hours at home. I am the only person to look after him, as we two only live alone in our home. If I do not remain fit, how will I take care of him. Therefore, I come here to learn and practice Yoga so that I can remain fit to take care of my sick husband".
What will I say to her after hearing this..............? I appreciated her commitment to her purpose. From that day until I was teaching Yoga in that public park of Ahmedabad and she was coming, I was taking special care of her so that she is on, in her mission....
This is the value of "Yoga" that commoner respectable Gujarati Lady of 75years had told me and taught me that day.
Yoga has tremendous value for life, if one can continue the motivation of practicing it continuously maintaining the motivation all through. Let me also admit, it is not easy to continue that motivation given various worldly disturbances we go through daily, but it is possible.
Sometimes I write to you all based on facts of my own experience, because that is what I can document with authenticity linking to an occasion, and with utmost veracity. Those who like it I am grateful to all of you.
