SOME INSIGHT FROM THE NEW PORTAL OF DGFT (DIRECTOR GENERAL OF FOREIGN TRADE) FOR THE BENEFIT OF (RELEVANT) READERS

I am sharing some insight out of first hand experience from the New Portal of DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce, Govt of India) for the benefit of relevant readers who may have IEC (Import Export Code).

Like GST Portal and the New Income Tax Portal, a New DGFT Portal have been put into function.

By a Notification No: 58 / 2015-2020, the DGFT ( Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India ) dated 12-February-2021 made it mandatory that the IEC Codes have to be updated electronically through the New Portal (even if no changes, it has to be just updated as confirmed on line) in April-June Period of the financial year. This practice did not exist before, is a newly introduced practice. The Notification, may be, has escaped the attention of lot of people under Covid-19 pressure. I am cut-pasting the three clauses that are relevant for this post of mine.

If the IEC Code is not updated as said above, it will get deactivated as per the said notification, giving an window to update the details again and reactivate through the Portal Electronically on line, by paying a fee.

Possibly, the New DGFT Portal is also being handled by Infosys (non-confirmed, heard, but I also believe it so), who handle the GST and New Income Tax Portal. And the DGFT Portal cannot be said to be out of system flaws happening.

In case your IEC Code gets deactivated due to the above reason, you will get a very short email at your registered email id informing you and asking you to follow a process to reactivate online. That may be a bit complicated and cumbersome process, but you have no other choice.

When you follow the process to update your IEC Code online, there may be some or many error messages you may come across, those will not be your fault and even if you may be entering your data/information correctly, but the System Errors (System faults, very normal ). I am not saying any specific as it may be various types.

They have a dedicated call centre number you can speak there but may not be the solution, I could not find them to be very helpful other than saying some standard answers and asking you to raise Service Requests.

The correct step for Solution will be that, you raise Service Request through their Window called "My Dashboard" and enclose the Screen Shot of the Error message you get while updating your IEC.

They will give some resolution by informing you by email and SMS and through the Portal, if it does not work, again re-open the same Service Request and enclose the screenshot of the new error message you get. Keep reopening the Service Request again and again; while they will be closing it again and again, till the time your problem is solved.

As per my firsthand experience, I struggled with them for 10-Grand Days, from 15-Dec-2021 to 24-Dec-2021 by 3-times opening/re-opening the Service Request (SR) and speaking to their help line number many times, when finally on 24th Dec 2021, the error messages I was getting got resolved.

Sharing the insight only for the benefit of my Relevant Reader friends in their interest and not to create/invite any debate of any kind on this subject.
