NEVER UNDERESTIMATE EVEN A LADY
SELLING FISH FROM A BASKET ON THE STREET

Sharing an experience of just of morning yesterday (19th Dec, 2021, Sunday), for the benefit of the readers.

Today(19th Dec 2021), in the morning, I went for a walk of about 2kms that I normally cover in 30mins and I come back by 30mins.

Back on the way, I just got into a small street of Bombay (Mumbai), India, where there are some men and women who sell fish sitting on the road itself from small baskets that they carry on their heads.

A specific variety of sea fish popular across India, little expensive also, was being sold by a man there. The size of fish was hardly 50gms each, he had only 10 of it , the price he offered was agreeable to me, hence I picked up. But I was looking for another 10 of that same fish to make up the quantity I wanted for family consumption. Then I found out another woman was selling the same fish and similar size. I just told her that if she gives 10 of that fish at the same price that I have already purchased from a nearby seller sitting 4-5 sellers away I can by 10 fishes from her, she agreed instantaneously.

She asked me to hand over the same polythene bag wherein I was holding the first 10-fishes purchased from the first seller-man. I handed over the bag to her and she was swiftly pushing in those small fishes from her basket to the same polythene bag. Normally and sometimes, if you don't check the counting you may also land up getting some less in number in quantity in such cases, as per past experience, while price would be agreed ( at same price ).

Therefore, after she has completed pushing in fishes into the bag, I checked and asked her if she has pushed in 10-fishes into that polythene bag. She quickly replied, "Yes", but she also added saying that "If the other man has put in 10-fishes in the bag, if we re-count now it will be 20 and for your satisfaction let us count the entire quantity again".

I was sure the first man had put in 10-fishes in the bag. I agreed and requested her to count the entire quantity again to ensure that she has by chance not done any tricks "hath safai" as normally done while counting at this kind of places.

She counted again and the total came out to be 20. So the man and woman sellers both were right in putting in 10-fishes each in the bag. I also concluded that the lady was quite intelligent and logical.

Here what I observed; this (woman) seller had her inherent doubt, if the first (man) seller has put in 10-fishes rightly in the bag or not ( or has done any "hath safai" before ). Therefore, she knew that possibility of wrong happening is there.

She also indirectly meant, " her honesty is relative to the other person's honesty of putting 10-fishes in the bag ". (Definitely she did not study the Einstein's theory of Relativity ?).

I thanked the lady seller for taking the pain to recount the entire quantity and establishing the fact that both of them were right.

She finally said " It is good that you wanted recounting, otherwise, if I would have by chance pushed in more fishes of mine (more than 10) into the bag, I would have also lost?

I concluded, “She can not be obviously under estimated...."

I smiled and left the place.........
