KURIEN’S KILLING SENSE OF HUMOUR USED TO MAKE
HIM MORE POPULAR : AND HE EXPLOITED IT VERY WELL TO HIS ADVANTAGE
I have written a number of Articles, and published here in this Blog (drnimain.blogspot.com ) keeping in mind Dr. V. Kurien's Birth Centenary 1921 -2021.
As
I have written and many write from time to time, Dr. Kurien was an
extraordinarily gifted person. Within
his serious persona, there was a hidden but killing sense of humour that could
mesmerize audience and used to make him extremely popular. He also knew the art
of exploiting his killing sense of humour at the right time to his advantage.
Some interesting instances here below:
INDIAN
AIRLINES MIS-PRINTING HIS NAME IN THE BOARDING PASS AS : V K URINE ( in stead of V. KURIEN ):
Once Indian Airlines had mis-printed his Boarding Pass with the name as : V K URINE ( in stead of V. KURIEN ). While giving a speech at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi in a huge conference, Dr. Kurien went public in describing how Indian Airlines had mis-printed as V. K. Urine and the entire audience was a non-stoppable laughter for a while.
GERMAN ECONOMIST SAYING IN PUBLICLY PUBLISHED ARTICLE IN FAO’S CERES : KURIEN CAN BE A SON-OF-A BITCH IN SOME OF HIS DEALINGS WITH PEOPLE BUT HE GETS THINGS DONE (AS AN EXCELLENT MANAGER):
It is true that a
German Economist had publicly published an article in FAO’s ( Food and
Agricultural Organization of United Nation’s ) Ceres ( 1978 ) Kurien can be a
son-of-a bitch in some of his dealings with people but he gets things done (as
an Excellent Manager ). Dr. Kurien had not left that published article to fend
itself inside the publication, he photocopied a lot of it and shared and
circulated widely among his friends, family and even to the extent of with his
own mother.
I knew about this killing sense of humour Dr. Kurien had inside his outwardly serious looking persona that he would leave no effort to exploit at the right time to his advantage. If you attend a meeting with him, formal or non-formal he used to entertain with his exquisite sense humour to make the meetings quite lively. The instances cited above are true and I have verified it to be true with Dr. Tushaar Shah, Former Director and Professor of Economics, IRMA having also published about it in an article Titled as : Remembering Verghese Kurien, Economics & Political Weekly, September 29, 2012.
