THE WORLD SOIL DAY: RESPECT THE SOIL, “ MAA MATI “ …“THE MOTHER SOIL”
December 5 is proudly celebrated as “World Soil Day” to recognize
the importance of healthy soil and to convey and circulate among the world
population the criticality of maintaining soil health for the survival of
mankind and to impress the importance of sustainable management of soil
resources around globe.
Published data indicate that in 2019, the “World Soil Day” was excitedly celebrated in more than 100 countries through 560 events around the world.
The theme of the World Soil day 2020, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) campaign, is “Keep soil alive, protect soil biodiversity”. By encouraging and impressing on people around the world to engage themselves in consciously and proactively improving soil health, the campaign envisages and aims to fight soil biodiversity loss and focus on management of soil resources sustainably.
In Indian Tradition it is said “MAA MATI“ ( “Maa” meaning Mother and “Mati” meaning Soil ) and the Soil gets the status of “Mother”.
Can anybody deny, that devoid of soil, the Mankind will not survive, it will lose its existence? If the health of the Soil is destroyed, the food supplies and food ecosystem of the World will get severely impaired, imbalanced and handicapped to maintain the food supplies; and the food security of the World would go down the drain. Every man and woman of the world in fact should be made to be aware of and realize the growing challenges in soil management and soil health reconstruction, fighting soil biodiversity loss and we must put effort in encouraging governments, organisations, communities and individuals for maintenance of sustainable soil health around the globe.
Every gram of grain, fruits, vegetables, spices, condiments, stimulants, eggs, meat and their derivatives as food stuff we eat or drink are the contributions of Soil. Every milli litre of milk we drink can’t be possible without the contribution of soil. The contribution of soil in terms of food, animal food, feed, fodder and forages and in terms of the elements, ions and molecules for plant nutrition is just essential and un-substitutable for the World.
The Soil has to be treated utmost like a living being, as the health and nutrition of a living being is continuously needed to be monitored and maintained. Similarly, the maintenance of soil health (the composition and fertility of soil) with practices, procedures and methods, whether traditional or modern and scientific, is a concern that can not be undermined by the world under any circumstances.
Conservation of Soil by checking natural or manmade soil erosion requires world efforts in more and higher scale than existing today. As the world’s population increases and expands, the need for housing, industrialization and habitation keep increasing over time and the soil is the first target of attack to meet these needs. At the same time, for ever increasing need for food, feed, fodder and forages, there is no other way than depending on the soil. I am not intending to write here any volume on Soil management, there are enough literature available on this subject. Soil Science is one of the main branch of studies in all courses involving Agricultural Sciences and Technology globally.
What is required is the consciousness and sensible concern of the World towards the Soil, “Soil the Mother ”. Respecting the Soil, its health, ecosystem of soil and its bio-diversity is the essence for all times to come.
The “World Soil Day” came into being as an international day on December 05 every year, after the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) recommended it in 2002. Under the leadership of Thailand and within the framework of the Global Soil Partnership, FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations) supported the formal establishment of World Soil Day. The FAO Conference has unanimously endorsed World Soil Day in June 2013. The FAO requested its official adoption at the 68th United Nations General Assembly. Thus, in December 2013, the UN General Assembly declared by designating December 5, 2014, as the first official World Soil Day.
The day ( World Soil Day on December 05 ) also corresponds with the official birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, who in fact, was instrumental for it actively and had officially sanctioned the event. In 2016, this day was officially recognized in memory and with respect for the said monarch of Thailand, after he died in October 2016 working as the head of state for Thailand for seven years.
