PIT FALLS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE 
IF NOT APPLIED APPROPRIATELY


           In the recent years, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ( AI ), has generated a hype globally. It is primarily the software companies who have created this hype to generate windfall business, while its utility can create most dangerous situations if the software has flaws in development, programming and application domain.

Artificial Intelligence is supposed to work in areas, where applying human intelligence ( natural intelligence of human brain ) may be a limitation both in terms of timing, volume and access, that is what the software companies selling Artificial Intelligence Software Systems ( to be combined with hardware systems) have been prescribing and preaching about. However, it has to be developed carefully and applied carefully, that is what is the essence of AI.

Some real life examples, even observed by me would be handy to understand this contention. A prestigious organization of the world some time back started sending me some remote consulting and advisory projects to advise and discuss on topics related to “ Space Science “. In reality I am not an expert in Space Science while I do have expertise in a variety of subjects as per my qualifications, experiences, exposure, extensive knowledge and common sense to say. Space Science is a subject, on which I believe NASA experts kind of experts can discuss. It kept on coming to me as leads through emails for quite some time and I was getting really baffled with it without not being able to accept it and do anything with it. But they were a very large organization handling experts on line and they had told me that they respect me a lot as a very valuable expert having been placed in 7th/8th Rank of Experts among more than half a million experts listed with them globally, according to my experiences, exposure and qualifications and thus there was mutual respect from both sides. Therefore, I wrote them after some time very  politely explaining what is happening and requesting them to find out why it is happening while it was not happening so before, while their Research Associates were working and addressing the subject matters. I in fact, received a response from them apologetically that they have implemented Artificial Intelligence (AI) recently and because of its flaws it is happening and they would like to rectify it in the due course.

Another example I have seen, one of the Telecom Companies is using Artificial Intelligence through its call centers. When one is speaking, it catches clues from the dialogue being spoken in an unfairly imaginative ways many times and immediately it is providing feed to some call centers may be associated with it whatever way to send an SMS after the phone call. For instance, if you have spoken about the word “Real” in some sense, it will send SMS from some Builders ( Construction Companies ) offering sale of Real Estate to buy, while you never may be dreaming to purchase any real estate. By chance if you have spoken regarding “tax” you may get an SMS regarding some matters of “Goods and Services Tax”, “Professional Tax”, “Income Tax”,  "Property Tax" , "Sales Tax" and/or Value Added Tax  or something like that regarding all kinds of taxes, that can even frighten you or psychologically burden and stress you up even if there would be nothing regarding that you should bother about it. The very strange part of it, in one example I am mentioning for illustration, while the target already has a tax registration for more than 10years, gets SMS and email to register for it.  Not only SMS, you can expect to receive emails with similar subjects, as from the Mobile Phone number they can track your email ids and send emails also on various subject whether to sell some product or services or some notifications which may be totally  not concerning you and irrelevant for you.

Similarly, from the emails you write, the AI fellow will pick up some words or phrases or texts, and use/misuse it to send you a dozen of emails or SMS, as from emails the Mobile Phones can be linked and vice versa. Such emails or SMS are just useless and waste of your time, space and money in terms of consuming your internet facility  and even can get into your head and create lot of stress for nothing. Even AI is being put to use to track what you visit in Internet and write in messenger platforms and social media. Most of the times it is more discrete than it is disclosed. Therefore, this hidden eye being implanted could be more dangerous in real sense than the human eye and human senses if used against you.

At global level, the Governments are being brain washed by big Software Companies more and more to use AI and the Governments are also falling for it as an easy tool to pounce upon their citizens. For Governments it looks very lucrative and attractive, because the Governments have to handle Big Data and Big Numbers and it sounds them as “the tool’ for administrative purposes. In India the penchant for using AI in public systems is clearly seen in recent times. Even a top functionary handling the Telecom and IT in India, said recently in public media that the future is going to be “AI and Data”; I do not know how much he really comprehended and visualized regarding what he said, but it was said, may be he was fed with brainwashing information to say this.

Blanket and Indiscriminate use of AI software systems without assessing its impact on the target can create havoc and citizen unrests unduly because, in a fraction of a second it can impact a lot of people in a National perspective. Even some countries have been brain washed by the large software companies to use AI for monitoring the tax regime. India is no exception to that. Some countries have used it at the initial stages not without burning fingers. The larger the mass of population, it requires larger efforts to carefully assess the impacts of AI and its suitability in larger Application involving huge population. The AI is nothing but a machine language, it has certain limitations always in terms of distinguishing and identifying differences that a human brain can otherwise capture at the right places. It is not denied that the AI can handle the volume and spread of information (data or situation based) that human brain can not afford to match given the time factor to perform, however the negative impact can also be in similar scale and distortion, that can create havoc.

The developers of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems advocate its application from Agriculture to Avionics ( including Space ), however, what I say is, its application has to be made after careful and diligent assessment of impacts in the areas where it has to be applied, before universal application in that area. After applying, crying about it and going for correction or damage control can prove very costly. Because if some one says the benefits would be unlimited out of AI, the negative impacts can also happen in similar scale.  The Pit Falls of AI has to be recognized in targeted application areas before putting into application universally in that area, that is the essence.

In using AI any where whether in Public Systems or Private Systems, the purpose should not be to get brainwashed by what its developer says, it has to be tested to gauge the possible impact over time and to be used very carefully. In reality, AI is not for use everywhere or anywhere, that is what matters to be understood. Globally, increasingly it is being pushed to be used in public systems, that is a cause to be recognized and to be pursued sensibly.

May be, I have written this small article with more common sensical approach so that all readers will be able to understand easily, while I don’t claim to be any AI expert in any way; my purpose is to convey that the Artificial Intelligence (AI) has pit falls that has to be understood so that wile applying it anywhere due diligence is undertaken for its impact.
