THE NATIONAL AYURVEDA DAY:
CORRELATION BETWEEN AYURVEDA AND “DHANTERAS”( DHAN-TRAYODASHI ) ...........
“DHAN-TRAYODASHI”
or the 13th day of the “Fortnight of Darkness” (1st Fortnight
) during the month of “ Kartik “ as per Indian traditional Calender ( normally
falling somewhere in the months of October/November as per English Calender
every year ) is the day falling one day before ( or the day-before ) Diwali Day
( the Festival of Lights ). This day, the Dhan-Trayodashi is popularly called
as “DHANTERAS” in India ( as an acrynym of Dhan and Trayodashi ). Dhanteras Day
is celebrated as an important festival day before Diwali mostly in Western and
Northern Parts of India where the business communities and households worship
the God/Goddess of Wealth ( Goddess Lakshmi, God Ganesh and other Gods ) in
various ways praying for more wealth and prosperity.
Also in another way, Dhan-Trayodashi is celebrated as a
festival and auspicious day for worshiping “Lord Dhanwantari” ( God of Medical
Science, who is said to be the Mythological Doctor for the Gods and Goddesses
in Heaven ). Dhan-trayodashi is supposed to be the birth day of Lord Dhanwantari. The Ancient Indian Literature called Medical Science with the short
and single name as : AYURVEDA. Although AYURVEDA may be dealing with different
systems of the practices, procedures and ingredients of Medical Science, it is
undisputed that AYURVEDA was the ancient Indian system of Medical Science.
The “Charaka Samhita” is the famous book of Ancient Medicine
as per Indian Ayurvedic System. The ‘Sushruta Samhita’ is the other famous book
of surgical training and instruments, gynaecology and obstetrics etc., as per
ancient Indian Ayurvedic System. Both “Charaka Samhita” and ‘Sushruta Samhita’
are under increased research during the contemporary modern days to establish
their relevance more and more in the modern day medical science areas in
different ways. “Charaka” was the most celebrated pioneer of the practice of
medicine in ancient India ( called as Ayurveda ). The existence of Charaka is
believed to be in and he is believed to have been born in 300 BCE in the Punjab
State of India. He is known as the “Indian father of Medicine”.
Sushruta
was in fact the other famous and most celebrated physician of ancient India and
he was the main author of ‘Sushruta Samhita’, as mentioned, is the famous book dealing
with Surgery in Ancient India under the Ayurvedic System.
Although “Ayurveda” historically remained a subject dominated
by the Indian “ Sadhus' ” ( Monks or Saintly Communities ) practices for some centuries
together, it got research attention as a matter of Science related to health
and medicine not very long back and also it has got significant commercial
attention in the field of Health and Medicine in the modern age now in order to
explore and utilize this ancient branch of science and practice for health.
The day of “ Dhan-Trayodashi “ or “Dhanteras “ as it is
called popularly, has been declared in India as the “ NATIONAL DAY OF AYURVEDA “. Thus the day of Dhan-Trayodashi or Dhanteras will
be celebrated as the National Day of Ayurveda every year in India. This year November 13,2020 is the National Ayurveda Day.
While Covid-19 is prevailing in the World today and has in
fact shaken the health back bone and economic situation Globally and very badly,
and it is also reported that there are lot of research going on in Ayurvedic
System how to combat the ailments out of microorganisms like Covid-19, celebrating
the “National Day of Ayurveda” on Dhanteras Day could be in the interest of
mankind as a whole.
