TURNING POINT OF LIFE:
TO LEAD AND TO FATHER A NATION:
THE BEST CASE OF MAHATMA GANDHI
Every person in whatever situation he/ she may be in, would
have a turning point in life, that would install a change of course of his/her
life to scale much higher heights (or down turn to much deeper depth-which no
one likes or less cited). Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (the given family name of
Mahatma Gandhi) was an England educated successful Barrister, a bright career
of a jurist was ahead and possibly he had wished to be one of the best jurists
of the world. He did never expect that he would do anything other than his
illustrious career as a Barrister and scale great heights as a jurist of the
world.
However, he had a turning point of life, that was the incident of
Britishers throwing him out of the 1st Class Railway Compartment at the Pietermaritzburg
railway station, located about one hour railway run from Durban in South Africa,
on 7th June, 1893. In spite of having a valid First Class Railway
ticket, because he was a Black (said to be black in skin colour), he was not
allowed to travel and was thrown out of the first class railway compartment
then. His self esteem was extremely hurt by the racial discrimination he faced
by this incident, it seized his mind and he realized how much difficulties his
fellow countrymen must be facing back home in India, under the then British
rule.
He felt that, the glamorous job of a Barrister did not fit into his future
course of life. He was able to see through, how the people of India would have
been dealt with, for almost 300years by then under the colonial ruling by the
British. He quickly decided to come back to India and work for her freedom.
With this turning point and his conviction to work for freedom of India, made
him lead the freedom movement of India based on his adopted principle of
non-violence that forced the British leave India releasing her into Independence.
This turning point changed his life altogether to achieve the status of “Mahatma
Gandhi”, the father of the Nation of India. It is strongly believed that if
this turning point would not have happened and “Mahatma Gandhi” ( in literary
English - Gandhi The Great Soul ) would not have been thrown out of the first
class compartment of the train in South Africa, most probably he would have
remained a celebrated Barrister, may be would have been a best known jurist of
the world and India's freedom would not have happened on 15th August, 1947, as destiny
of India would have otherwise decided when it would have happened, may be some
years later, and the independence of India would have been delayed for some
more years beyond 1947.
Mahatma Gandhi is the best case to exemplify, how the
turning point of life could change the course all together and something looked
impossible then could be possible to be achieved. Thus lives do have turning
points.
[ I had written this note on 2nd
October 2019 on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi as a tribute and
circulated among some friends’ groups through What’s App messenger. With
certain editing, I am posting here for wider circulation ].
