PRIVATIZATION OF AIRPORTS IN INDIA ..

PRIVATIZATION OF AIRPORTS IN INDIA

Privatization of public utility organizations and public sector has become a persistent effort during the present regime in India. Privatization should not be considered to be a fashion of ruling, imitating any other country such as USA or there is a ministry in the name of “ Disinvestment Ministry “ who has no job, to show some performance of disinvestment ministry, privatization has to be done by force. India by its constitution is a socialistic republic and the government has a responsibility towards Indian society. The cost of all privatized facilities cannot be afforded by the Indian society at this point of time. What is to be privatized and not have to be considered by legitimate reasoning considering society point of view and not on the basis of might that a government has been voted by absolute majority in Parliament, it can do anything or to satisfy the existence of disinvestment ministry.

Privatized airports in India has shown certain un-affordable costs are imposed on public who cannot afford. For example, at Mumbai Airport, parking facilities have become extremely un-affordable, if one has come to drop or pick up a ward or friend at the airport, he/she will not go back without coughing up about Rs 300/- by parking for 30-45 minutes duration. Similar would be at Delhi. So the cost of basic facilities goes up exponentially, I am not saying about luxuries the private operators create. Therefore when the Airports are being leased for 50 years, what they will do, nobody knows. A government of 5years will lease the airports and go, the public will have to cry for 50years. Unless safeguards are in place privatization of Airports can be detrimental to public interest in 50years leasing of airports. The safeguards have to be placed for public scrutiny, however it is not in sight in public domain. In the present age almost everyone wants to fly. In such a case privatization of Airports have to be undertaken with extreme caution as the costs to public is bound to go up significantly. Without public scrutiny of safeguards that should be in place, the privatization of Airports indiscriminately should be put under check.
