PHILOSOPHY OF LORD GANESH IS NOT JUST A STORY OR LEGEND,
IS A RESPECTABLE WAY OF LIFE
Lord Ganesh ( or Lord Ganapati as otherwise called ) philosophy is not only a story or legend but a way of life, very respectable. In other parts of the world and outside India, as I have heard in first mouth Lord Ganesh is popularly called as “ Elephant God “ as pictorially He carries the head of an elephant and body of human. In a number of countries I have experienced people knowing Lord Ganesh ( as Elephant God ) and asking curious questions during my visits in the past. As per the mythological story, the elephant head was transplanted in the body of Lord Ganesh when he was a child because, while Child Ganesh was guarding at the entrance of her residential abode, on her instructions, when Goddess Parvati ( mother of Lord Ganesh and wife of Lord Shiva ) had gone to take bath, Lord Shiva tried to enter the residential abode and Lord Ganesh as a child did not allow him entry without permission of Goddess Parvati and this led to a war between the Father and the Son and Lord Shiva had beheaded Lord Ganesh of his human head. Later when Goddess Parvati learnt of the episode and came to the picture, she demanded before Lord Shiva ( the Mahadev, the Boss of Gods ) to enliven their son Ganesh otherwise she would kill herself and give her life for his cause. Then Lord Shiva accepted to enliven their son Ganesh, however as it was not possible to enliven Ganesh with a human head in spite of the best efforts of the aides of Lord Shiva, as was best available as per the enlivening requirement and time allowed, Lord Ganesh in his child form was enlivened with the transplant of head of an elephant’s child and thus he carries the elephant head. But as Lord Ganesh stood by the trust bestowed on him to upheld the dignity and grace of his mother at the cost of his head , Lord Shiva was very pleased and had blessed Lord Ganesh with unique privilege that He will get the first preference and worshiped first before any other God and even powerful Gods like Brahma, Bishnu and Maheshwar ( Lord Shiva himself ) in any occasion of worshiping ( puja ) of Gods. Lord Ganesh was bestowed with enormous powers to deal with and execute evil ( hence called Bighna Binasak ).
Lord Ganesh did not know initially that it was Lord Shiva, husband of Goddess Parvati and His own father who was trying to enter. Later when he was also told by Lord Shiva, He unambiguously said that, as he has been entrusted for guarding the entrance, he is responsible for guarding the entrance and he could not allow entry to Lord Shiva under His pressure, until and unless his mother ( Goddess Parvati ) gives permission and He ( Lord Shiva ) should wait until She gives permission. As Goddess Parvati was taking bath at the same time permission from her could not come on time and Lord Shiva was annoyed of the fact that He in spite of being the boss of Gods, a small child ( Ganesh ) is not budging to his orders. Lord Shiva felt hurt by esteem and by declaring a. war between the duo, he beheaded Lord Ganesh ( the child Ganesh ).
Here it was really not a war between a Great God ( Lord Shiva ) and a small child ( Lord Ganesh ) or between the father and son. Lord Ganesh was guarding the entrance as a responsible guard entrusted by Goddess Parvati and he was holding on to the guarding principle and responsibility bestowed on him. He was only requesting Lord Shiva to wait till Goddess Parvati gives permission to allow him. But Lord Shiva, who is also a great god, possibly tried to test the commitment of Lord Ganesh to his responsibility and also He ( Lord Shiva ) tried to justify that as a small child and His son, He did not allow His access to his wife while that access can’t be obstructed by Ganesh as a small child or any small child. The small children can’t prevent and obstruct access of a husband ( the father ) to the wife ( the mother ). Goddess Parvati would not have intended her direction to block entry of Lord Shiva, her husband, that sensitivity and relationship could not be comprehended by Lord Ganesh then as a small child ( otherwise He might not have obstructed Lord Shiva’s access to his wife ) and it was obvious that the husband-wife relationship and its unrestricted access could not be understood by Child Ganesh benevolently. Therefore Lord Shiva felt his legitimate access power was being obstructed by a small child illegitimately and He wanted to eliminate blockade to find his way in by raising a war and beheading Child Ganesh. The story in fact does not show Lord Shiva in poor light in any way as He had no other choice to enforce his access to his wife ( Goddess Parvati ). Ultimately Lord Shiva is the great god having powers to destroy the whole universe.
However, the Philosophy of Lord Ganesh in this case, directs to hold the right principles and responsibility entrusted at all times by whatever cost and not to succumb to undue pressure. Thus the Philosophy of Lord Ganesh, is not just a story or legend, it points to a respectable way of life upholding principles and standing by entrusted responsibility.
As such Lord Ganesh is the Lord for Bliss, Peace and Prosperity and a savior from all perils.
( On the occasion of Ganesh Puja / Ganapati Puja / Ganesh Chaturthi )
