INSTALLATION OF EMAS SHOULD BE BENEFICIAL AND ESSENTIAL AT MANGALORE AND KOZIKODE AIRPORTS OF INDIA
ENGINEERED MATERIAL ARRESTING SYSTEM
( EMAS ) which has been
approved by the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) of USA is one of the most adopted safety mechanisms
in use in Critial Airports and Airports with risk parameters around the world.
EMAS systems are installed in order to arrest skidding of the Aero planes while
overshooting of the runway. A standard EMAS system can stop an overshooting aircraft
from overrunning the runway at approximately 80 miles per hour.
It can prove to be very beneficial in case of Table Top
Runways at Airports such as Mangalore and Kozikode Airports of India. The
following information would help understanding the subject very well. If we fit
EMAS ( that can arrest skidding a plane over-running a runway ) at Kozikode and
Mangalore Airports on both sides of Raunways the cost will be Rs 400 Crores.
The current price of a Boeing 737-800 is USD 106.1 million ex-factory; i.e. Rs
800 Crores approx. We lost 159 lives at Mangalore by 2010 air crash and 18
lives at Kozikode air crash 3-days back in August 2020. The value of lives can’t be equated
with money; it goes without saying, it is priceless. Also we lost 2-Boeing
737-800s in these two crashes costing Rs. 1600 crores minimum. Who can be more
stupid than us ? Shouldn’t we have installed EMAS at these two airports long
back ? EMAS has been successively installed in 100 Critical Airports worldwide
and available in the world at least around 1998 FAA approved as per reports.
