FROM DURBAN TO “HEY RAM “
FROM DURBAN TO “HEY RAM “
Mr. Mohan Das Karamchand Gandhi, the Porbandar boy (of India) wanted to be a prominent jurist of the world and went to London to study Bar-at-Law, but the destiny made him Mahatma Gandhi. Britishers threw him out of the First Class Railway Compartment at Durban (in South Africa where he was practicing as a Barrister) in spite of having a valid ticket, as he was an Indian not entitled to travel in a first class railway compartment. That triggered the mind and heart of Mohandas and made his barrister-ship bitter as he could realize the life his countrymen would be leading back home in India and he decided to come back. That incident of being thrown out of train had it not happened, possibly Mohandas would have had different position in life and India’s independence would possibly have been delayed for some more years beyond 1947. He came back, adopted the path of nonviolence uniquely, led India to independence in 1947 exactly on August 15, 1947.
Possibly as destiny
drove Mohandas out of his barrister-ship to be the Mahatma, the savior of colonized
India from British occupation then, same destiny had written in the fate of
India to be divided into two parts ( India and Pakistan ) , with independence. The unexpected and
not-cherished partition again became the trigger that did not allow the Mahatma
imbibe the taste of independence of India and further shape its future for not
more than 5 months and 15 days counted from 15th August 1947. Unexpected bullets
on 30th January 1948, again made the Mahatma say “Hey Ram “ and closed his
eyes. The father of Indian Nation was untimely snatched out of the lap of
India. His legacy of Non-violence is still cherished by the world. His soul
remains as the soul of India to guide her forever. (I wrote this tribute to
Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 2020).
