THE NEW "RECIPROCAL TARIFF POLICY" ANNOUNCED BY USA : WORKING WITH THE "NEGOTIATION FRAME-WORK" IS GOING TO BE THE KEY -SHOULD NOT WORRY INDIA
Dear Readers,
The announcement of the "Reciprocal Tariff Policy" by USA yesterday on 13-Feb-2025, should not worry India.
Right now the India-USA trade has the following key or principal components:
a) USA has a trade deficit of Approx USD 40 Billion per year against India
b) USA's average Import Tariff on Indian Goods is 3%
c) India's average Import Tariff on USA Goods is 9.5%
d)
USA's imports from India constitute mainly Basic Goods ... Foods,
Pharma, Textile and Clothing, Personal Accessories and Utility Goods,
and Other Goods of Primary Nature as Components, Ingredients, Chemicals
and Raw Material Nature, Service Products like Software and Software
Services.
e) India's imports from USA constitute mainly High-Tech Products, Defence Goods and High-Tech Services.
The Disadvantage that USA can see on the trade front with India, is just 6.5% which if quantified approximately looks like this:
i)
USA is giving softer deal of 6.5% on about USD 90 Billion Imports from
India now ...... USD 6 Billion(Tariff or Revenue) to USA Consumption
...that goes to mostly for Household Grocery for USA Consumers.
ii)
India is giving a bit of harder deal (that USA sees so) of 6.5% on
about USD 50 Billion Imports from USA now..... USD 3 Billion(Tariff or
Revenue) to Indian Consumption .... that goes to mostly for National or
Industrial Consumption.
This
is not a very Big gap, and also the composition of the Trade, Targeted
Destination of Consumption and the International-Relationship between the
two Nations, India and USA hold the key, that is why the Administration
of Hon'ble President Trump, who have a good outlook towards India, has
taken a softer stand on India. They need a bit of better access of USA
Goods/Services to Indian Market, it is understood. Moreover,
USA may not like to be harsh to its own household consumption; it is
also prudency to be taken into account. At the same time, India can
afford to soften the deal for Imports from USA as it is primarily the
National Consumption and Industrial consumption involved. I believe it
will get resolved easily with little bit of efforts from both sides.
Under
a Negotiation Frame-Work to be put in place, that has been discussed
yesterday (13-Feb-2025) between the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Shri
Narendra Modi Ji, and the Hon'ble President of USA Mr. Donald Trump,
at White House yesterday it can be easily resolved to the advantages of both India and USA.
Further,
as the present USA Administration (President Trump Administration) is
taking a Friendly outlook and stand towards Russia as it is being seen
from the early days of its office, while Russia is also India's long
time strategic friendship, it is a Friend-of-Friend approach now, that
will work.
As the Times of India reported citing below, it is going to be synergy of MAGA (Make America Great Again) + MIGA (Make India Great Again), a MEGA Partnership to be looked forward to. It can work for India's National Interest.
